maggie and milly and molly and may

Cummings filled twenty pages of a notebook before this poem was finished.maggie and milly and molly and may
by E. E. Cummings

10

maggie and milly and molly and may
went down to the beach(to play one day)

and maggie discovered a shell that sang
so sweetly she couldn't remember her troubles, and

milly befriended a stranded star
whose rays five languid fingers were;

and molly was chased by a horrible thing
which raced sideways while blowing bubbles:and

may came home with a smooth round stone
as small as a world and as large as alone.

For whatever we lose(like a you or a me)
it's always ourselves we find in the sea

Oh! I just had to comment to tell you that I love that poem! It hurts, it's so beautiful.

Wow! The last few lines are so, so true! This poem leaves this landlocked gal longing for water!

I've always loved this one, Douglas - it should be on everyone's list of "Poems to Memorize." Thanks for providing the nudge to do so.

I always recall those those last lines every time I go to the beach - perfect here at the beginning of summer. Thanks!
