Detail of "The Age of Dinosaurs" from DINOTHESAURUS copyright 2009 by Douglas Florian
In today's New York Times Sunday Book Review is a nice review of DINOTHESAURUS. A picture would have been nicer, but the Baryonyx ate the photographer. Above is a detail of the opening poem illustration. Below is the review:
DINOTHESAURUS: Prehistoric Poems and Paintings.Written and illustrated by Douglas Florian.Atheneum. $17.99. (Ages 6 and up)
Florian’s whimsical rhyming text contains helpful lessons: for example, how to pronounce “Micropachycephalosaurus,” for “small, thick-headed lizard,” or “Plesiosaur” — “we always say PLEASE before we might bite.” A bit of dinosaur lore follows: “What kept the Spinosaurus warm / When it was colder than the norm? / Spines much like a solar panel. / (And long underwear of flannel.)” The underwear part might be misleading, but Florian’s art — in gouache, collage, colored pencil, stencils, etc. — is gorgeous and fun.

way cool!
Congrats on another fine review!
It's a great review and will definitely tempt readers to buy this - there are many dino-crazed kiddos out there. It's just a matter of letting their parents know about your great book. Congrats!
Douglas,
This book is sure to be a DINO-mighty big seller!
Well deserved! Congratulations. As always, your art work pulls me in…
Brilliant!(and from such a place of high-repute). You must be Plesed!

Great review, congrats! Hope you don't mind if I am mildly annoyed that anyone would even think to call the flannel underwear line possibly "misleading." Huh? Hello, it's poetic, funny fun!
Congrats on an awesome review!!!
Thanks everyone. I think the reviewer spoke tongue in cheek about "misleading underwear." Even 2nd graders know dinosaurs wear white underwear not red flannel.
Kudos on the kudos!
I'm so looking forward to getting your new book. Today at planning meeting a second grade teacher was excitedly telling me about how she is going to use Beast Feast with her next Unit of Study for Writing. I told her to check out your blog.
I can't wait to see these "gorgeous" dinosaurs. The colors are wonderful.
Huge CONGRATS!!!
What a terrific book. Can't wait to get it. Kids love dinosaurs and this will be up their alley.
The best review of all though, comes in watching Dinothesaurus in the hands of a bunch of boys...fired up and fighting to get at the rhyme, the illustrations and the fun and unique way of looking at the world of prehistory through a Florian lens! Loved the review, Doug...congrats on that. But know that these 11 and 12 year olds are living large on Florian!
Must get this book! I think it's going in the boys' Easter baskets next week. Looks fun!
I read your interview at Laura's blog and I love the story about you getting on the wrong train and finding dino bones in the subway walls that wouldn't leave you alone. I have always been afraid of getting on the wrong train and now I have this story to give me courage. I'll never forget it! Thanks!
